How to Choose the Right English Tutor: 7 Questions to Ask
There are thousands of English tutors online. Some are excellent; some just chat. Before you pay for lessons, ask these seven questions.
1. Are you trained to teach English as a second language?
Speaking English well is not the same as teaching it. Look for years of real experience with adult learners, and ask about training such as TESL, CELTA, TEFL or IELTS examiner training.
2. Who do you usually teach?
Teaching children is very different from teaching a nurse preparing for a job interview. Choose a tutor who mostly teaches adults like you.
3. How will you know my level?
A good tutor will check your speaking, listening, reading and writing in the first lesson and explain what to focus on.
4. What does a typical lesson look like?
You should be speaking for most of the lesson. If the teacher talks more than you, it is not a good fit.
5. Will you correct my mistakes?
Some learners want every mistake corrected; others want to build fluency first. A good tutor asks what you prefer.
6. Can you help with IELTS or CELPIP?
If you need a test score for immigration or citizenship, ask about their experience with the exact test — the speaking sections are very different.
7. Can I try a lesson first?
Most good tutors offer a short trial. It is the best way to see whether you feel comfortable speaking with them.
We offer a free 30-minute trial lesson, in person in downtown Toronto or online. Meet our teachers or message us to book.
