How Much Does an English Tutor Cost in Toronto? (2026 Guide)
If you are new to Canada and want to improve your English, one of the first questions is simple: how much will a private tutor cost? Here is what to expect in Toronto in 2026.
Typical prices
| Type of tutor | Typical price per hour (CAD) |
|---|---|
| Student or volunteer tutor | $15 – $30 |
| Online marketplace tutor | $20 – $50 |
| Experienced, certified ESL teacher | $40 – $70 |
| IELTS / CELPIP specialist | $50 – $90 |
Prices are usually a little lower for online lessons because neither of you has to travel.
What changes the price?
- Qualifications. Teachers with TESL Ontario, CELTA or a teaching degree usually charge more — and generally plan better lessons.
- Specialisation. Test preparation and business English cost more than general conversation.
- Lesson length. Many adults find 60 minutes ideal. 45-minute lessons can be cheaper and still effective.
- Packages. Buying 5 or 10 lessons often reduces the price per hour.
Is a private tutor worth it?
Free government classes (such as LINC) are excellent, but classes are large and schedules are fixed. A private tutor gives you 100% of the speaking time, works around your shifts, and focuses only on your goals — a job interview next week, a CELPIP score, or simply feeling confident on the phone.
How to get the most from your money
- Be clear about your goal before the first lesson.
- Book regular lessons — once or twice a week works better than occasional long ones.
- Do the short homework. Ten minutes a day makes a big difference.
- Ask your teacher to correct you more, not less.
